Communicating Gendre

Everybody has been profiled before, I know that I have. Whether it is for the way that you dress or how you decide to style your hair, people are going to make assumptions about your personality and your abilities with just a glance. Many of these assumptions stem from your perceived gender. I have personal experience being the only male working in a department made up of nine other people, all of which had a different gender than me. Through the first couple of days and weeks on the job, I started to notice that the tasks that I was being given were slightly different than the other people in my department, that’s when I noticed that the tasks that I was undertaking were considered to be more “manly” jobs. It took only a few conversations to find out that I was the only male to apply for the position and that was a large reason why I was awarded the position. Without even knowing my personality or background, I was perceived to have a certain value because I was a man and I was given different responsibilities than those around me, even though we were working the same job.
